Project Overview

Tail Gas Scrubber Installation

UCI was selected as the EPC contractor for design and construction of the tail gas caustic scrubber project at Holly Frontier El Dorado Refining, LLC in El Dorado, Kansas. MECS-Dupont provided the process engineering as well as supply of the scrubber tower internals. Rounding out the team was MKEC for engineering, Piping & Equipment for mechanical and Southwest Electric for the electrical work.

The new caustic scrubber system installed will act as a back-up tail gas treating unit for the tail off sulfur recovery units. This will allow HollyFrontier El Dorado to take the existing tail gas scrubbing unit off line for maintenance purposes while meeting the SO2 emission limits for the tail gas stream.

The work included civil and structural concrete, tower installation with steel support structure, tail gas incineration, air coolers for effluent water, all mechanical piping, instrumentation and electrical work.

UCI lead the team through the design, budget and scheduling by meeting weekly with the HollyFrontier El Dorado operations group through the life of the contract to help meet the owner’s goals of budget, schedule and no safety incidents or accidents.
